Where to Hang an LED Mirror: Height, Spacing, and Centering Rules

A great LED mirror can still look “off” if it’s hung too high, too low, or slightly out of alignment with the vanity. The goal is simple: comfortable eye-level use, enough clearance above the faucet, and a layout that looks centered and intentional.

Quick starting point (adjust to your faucet + user height):

  • Mirror center: around eye level for main users
  • Bottom edge: leave a small gap above the backsplash/countertop
  • Faucet clearance: leave enough space so the spout/handles don’t block your view

Below are practical rules you can use in almost any bathroom.

The 3 placement rules that work in most bathrooms

1) Center the mirror for the people who actually use it

Instead of guessing from the top edge, think about where your eyes land. The most comfortable setups place the middle of the mirror roughly around eye level for the main users in the home.
If your household has big height differences, slightly taller mirrors usually feel better because everyone can use them comfortably.

2) Keep the mirror clear of the faucet zone

If the mirror is too low, the faucet (or handles) can block your view and the area gets splashed more. A simple rule: leave a clean gap between the top of the faucet/handles and the bottom of the mirror, so you can see your face without visual clutter.

3) Center it to the vanity (not whatever is on the wall)

In most bathrooms, the mirror should be centered to the vanity/sink, not the entire wall. Even if you have a towel hook, niche, or cabinet nearby, centering to the vanity is what makes the setup look designed instead of accidental.

Simple spacing guide (use this as a starting point)

Bottom edge: leave breathing room above the countertop

Most bathrooms look best when the mirror bottom sits a little above the countertop/backsplash, not touching it and not floating too high.
If you’re unsure, start with a modest gap and adjust after taping the mirror outline on the wall (more on that below).

Faucet clearance: avoid the “crowded” look

If you have a taller faucet, your mirror will need more clearance. In practice: the higher the spout/handles, the more you should lift the mirror, but don’t lift it so high that the mirror becomes uncomfortable to use.

Height: taller often looks more premium than wider

If you’re choosing between two sizes, going a bit taller usually makes the wall look cleaner and more finished—especially in modern bathrooms.

Common bathroom scenarios (and how to place the mirror correctly)

Tall faucet (high spout)

Tall faucets are the number one reason people hang mirrors too high. The trick is to protect comfort: keep enough space so the faucet doesn’t block the view, but still keep the mirror’s main viewing area at a natural height.

If a tall faucet forces the mirror upward, consider choosing a taller mirror (so the center stays comfortable).

Wall-mounted faucet

With wall-mounted faucets, alignment matters even more. Most people prefer the mirror and faucet to feel “in the same vertical line,” so the wall looks balanced.

Round / oval / pill mirrors

Curved shapes can look wrong if they’re placed like a rectangle. Focus on: the lowest curve (make sure it isn’t too close to the faucet) and the mirror’s middle, so the main viewing area feels natural.

Double vanity: one mirror or two?

Both can look great—choose based on the style you want:

Two mirrors work best when:

  • each mirror is centered over its sink
  • both are mounted at exactly the same height

One large mirror works best when:

  • the vanity is wide and symmetrical
  • your lighting plan supports it (for example, a centered light bar or balanced side lighting)

Before you drill: the 2-minute tape test

This step saves so many “we hung it and now it feels wrong” moments.

Do this first

  • Use painter’s tape to outline the mirror shape at your planned height
  • Step back and look at it from the doorway
  • Stand close at the vanity like you would during daily routines

Check these things

  • Is it centered over the sink/vanity?
  • Does the faucet feel crowded under it?
  • Does the mirror “sit” at a comfortable height for your eyes?
  • Does it conflict with lights, shelves, or cabinets?

If something feels off, move the outline up or down a few centimeters. Small adjustments make a big difference.

FAQs

Should I center the mirror to the vanity or the wall?

In most bathrooms, center it to the vanity/sink. That’s what makes the layout look intentional.

How much space should be between the faucet and the mirror?

Enough that the faucet doesn’t block the reflection and the area doesn’t feel cramped. Taller faucets usually need a larger gap.

If I can’t decide, should I go taller or wider?

Often taller. It tends to look more premium and works better for different heights—just keep the bottom clearance practical.

What’s the most common mirror placement mistake?

Hanging the mirror too high because you’re trying to avoid the faucet—then the mirror becomes uncomfortable to use. If clearance pushes the mirror up, a taller mirror usually solves it.
